Right to Protection has launched the Trust Your Experience information campaign, dedicated to psychological support for veterans after their return to civilian life.
Some experiences are difficult to put into words, especially those connected with war and military service. After returning to civilian life, veterans may therefore wonder whether it is worth talking about what they have been through with a psychologist, and whether someone will be able to listen without judgement or dismissing their experience.
The campaign aims to show that it is possible to entrust your experience to a psychologist.
Psychological support offers an opportunity to talk about what you have been through in a safe space, where you are listened to without judgement. It is a space where you can talk, at your own pace, about what truly matters and do not have to face your experiences alone.
Head of the Veteran Programme of Right to Protection
Many studies show, on the one hand, a need for psychological support after returning to civilian life following military service and, on the other, a reluctance among veterans to seek such support. One of the reasons is internalised stigma. Through this campaign, together with our ambassadors, we aim to convey that seeking psychological support is not a sign of illness, but a way of building a new life.
As part of the campaign, we created two short videos featuring veteran Kateryna Pryimak and veteran Oleksandr Shvachka. They share their own stories and reflect on experiences that are not always easy to put into words, as well as on the possibility of entrusting those experiences to a psychologist.
We want seeking support from a psychologist to be seen as one of the ways people can take care of themselves after what they have been through — by having a space to talk, better understand their own experiences and receive support.
Head of the MHPSS & GBV Programme of Right to Protection
A psychologist’s work is, first and foremost, about building a relationship between two people. It is a partnership in which there is someone by your side who genuinely cares, who is sincerely concerned about your well-being and, at the same time, can offer honest, professional feedback. Our specialists continuously develop their knowledge and skills and receive professional supervision so that they can support veterans professionally and with care as they return to civilian life.
Trust Your Experience is about trust, dignity, and everyone’s right to support.
Watch and share the campaign videos so that more people know that psychological support is available and that it is possible to entrust your experience to someone.
We have also complied a list of organisations providing psychological support to veterans and their loved ones. You can find it on the capmaign page.
